The purpose of the RC is to prevent sound transmission from the drywall to the framing. There were other choices I could have made here. I could have done staggered studs. But that wasn't feasible in my situation, as the room was already small and I couldn't afford to give away another few inches in all dimensions. I could have gone with the more expensive channel and clip. But, on the basis of my friend Jim's advice (determined though his research), I decided the RC would be sufficient.
