As I mentioned earlier, the space I'm using for the drum room was formerly a utility room. I decided to make a closet to contain the water heater, water softener, and electrical service for the house. As all of those items are on one of the outside walls, the closet is formed by a single wall, with a door opening. To help reduce the problem of echo in the finished room, this new wall is raked and is not parallel to the opposite wall.

I suppose this is as good a place as any to discuss the final dimensions of the drum room. The room is approximately 12' x 10'. However, the smaller dimension has the raked wall, so that dimension is closer to 9' at one side.

The framing was standard 2x6 work.

While doing this framing work, I added furring strips to the existing 2x4 walls, to bring them to a 6" depth. I don't have a photo of the firred-out 2x4s, but on the next page, some of the photos show a stud which has the furring strip attached.
